Zusammenfassung:
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify">Weathering steel
is sparingly used in Mauritius. This study is aimed at investigating its
corrosion behaviour and mechanism, as compared to carbon steel, within the
rural region of Reduit, in the island of Mauritius. The results were expected
to enhance understanding of weathering steel's performance and potential use in
Mauritius and in regions with similar environment. </p><p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify">Carbon and
weathering steel samples were prepared and then exposed outdoors, according to
BS EN ISO 8565. Samples were retrieved at intervals of 3, 6, 9, and 13 months
to assess corrosion loss via the weight loss method. Environmental parameters,
including airborne salinity and sulphur dioxide deposition rates, were
monitored using the wet candle method and lead dioxide sulfation cylinders. The
corrosion products were investigated through Raman and Fourier Transform
Infrared Spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy, and Energy-Dispersive
X-ray Spectroscopy, to determine the corrosion mechanism.</p><p>
</p><p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify">The results
showed that the corrosion loss followed the bilogarithmic law, with the
weathering steel exhibiting approximately 41% less corrosion compared to carbon
steel. Both steel types underwent similar corrosion mechanisms, consistent with
the model proposed by Misawa et al. This study provides evidence supporting the
use of weathering steel as a corrosion-resistant material in the Mauritian
construction industry.</p>
